Under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, children have: “The right to express an opinion and to have that opinion taken into account, in any matter that affects them.”
BCCS Student Council vision statement: “To create and maintain a respected and formalised student body to represent student views that can help inform the decision-making process for pastoral, academic and whole school development.”
At BCCS, we believe that the voice of our pupils should be heard and their views taken into account. This corresponds to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and is in line with the Government’s Every Child Matters agenda.
One individual’s opinion is unlikely to change anything, yet equally it is impossible for the School to listen to all 450 pupils at once. However, if students speak collectively with one voice, they can send out a clear message: our Student Council provides all the students in the School with that one voice.
In December 2008, the new BCCS Student Council held its first meeting. It gives representatives from every year group at the Academy the opportunity to meet regularly for debate and to make decisions. The Student Council aims to gather pupils’ views, to plan initiatives and events, to lobby for change and generally to be a positive influence in the development of the School. The Council works in partnership with the School’s management, with staff and with parents.
The BCCS Student Council has a clear role in three distinct areas:
School environment – including uniform, rewards, behaviour policies, special events, staff appointments, school design, catering, social space, learning spaces, security
Social interaction – including behaviour that causes concern, mentoring, transition (e.g. Year 7 induction, GCSE choices, Year 12 induction), decision-making (e.g. associate membership of the BCCS Governing Body)
The classroom – learning organisation (e.g. grouping, seating plans, pupils possibly attending faculty meetings), homework policy, target-setting, qualities of good teaching & good learning, barriers to learning & aids to learning
Student Councils also have a part to play in Ofsted inspections of the School, following changes introduced in the 2005 inspection framework. Click here for more information.
