The modern Chemistry syllabus helps pupils learn Chemistry through focusing on how Science works. This takes examples of Chemistry being used in the world in which we live and helps students understand why it works. Our students regularly undertake experiments to learn through a hands-on approach.

In Year 10, our pupils follow the AQA GCSE Science A course. This course consists of two Chemistry modules, and the grades are combined with the module results for the other Sciences for the student to receive a GCSE in Science by the end of Year 10. As part of this course the pupils also need to complete an ISA, which is a little experiment with a follow-up examination based on the practical.

In Year 11, our pupils follow the AQA Additional Science course. This consists of an examination at the end of the year. The result is combined with the other Sciences examinations for the student to receive a GCSE in Additional Science. This part of the course also requires a different ISA to be completed.

The top set in Science follow a separate Science route. They are required to sit additional examinations throughout the two years and are awarded a GCSE in Chemistry along with a GCSE in the other Sciences.

Our AS and A Level students follow the AQA syllabus. The course has just been revised from the start of September 2008. The Chemistry department takes A Level students to Bristol University to attend workshops relevant to the course.

The AS course consists of 3 units:

Unit 1: Foundation Chemistry - Topic list
• Particles, composition of the nucleus, isotopes and use of mass spectrometer
• Calculating the amount of substance
• Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding and intermolecular forces
• The construction of the periodic table
• Organic chemistry
• Alkanes from crude oil.

Unit 2: Chemistry in action - Topic list
• Collision theory and effect
• Definitions of oxidation and reduction
• Redox properties of halogens and halide ions
• The extraction of Metals
• Haloalkanes and alkenes.

Unit 3: Investigative and Practical Skills  (Internal Assessment) - Topic list
• Making observations and measurements
• Analysing and evaluating results.
