The English department aims to provide all students with the required skills for clear communication in speech and writing, and to achieve their highest academic potential. Equally important is the ability to respond sensitively to a wide range of literature and to demonstrate an understanding of the techniques of fiction and non-fiction writing. English is taught as a journey of self-discovery and of the world that shapes us.

At Key Stage 3, our aim is to equip pupils with skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing. They pursue a range of activities designed to foster a love of the subject and a solid foundation for the examinations that follow. The department holds an impressive stock of literature and other resources that are continually updated.

GCSE students are encouraged to approach their studies in a more independent manner, to develop original thought and to pursue individual areas of interests. Texts ranging from broadsheet editorials to Jacobean love poetry are studied. Our English Literature A level course allows the strengths of individuals to be developed to their full potential, nurturing the dynamics of vibrant discussion and argument. The course offers a thought-provoking and highly engaging examination of a range of superb literature.

Additional enrichment activities include theatre trips, writing competitions, poetry performances, skills workshops and extensive support with wider reading. We work closely with the Drama department to enliven text study and encourage our students to involve themselves in the many School plays that are produced each year.
